JOB POST: ESOL PROGRAM INSTRUCTOR (PART-TIME)

New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) is seeking an ESOL Program Coordinator who will lead NICE’s efforts to provide immigrant workers with English classes for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

NICE is a community-based organization dedicated to advancing the rights of immigrant workers through innovative community organizing, grassroots advocacy, and service delivery. NICE builds the individual and collective power of some of the most vulnerable workers, such as day laborers, domestic workers, and other newly arrived immigrants, in Queens and across New York City. Current campaigns focus on curtailing wage theft and safety violations through construction contractor licensing reform, seeking justice for job seekers through employment agency reform, and garnering municipal support for day laborer worker centers. The NICE Community Job Center in Jackson Heights serves as a safer alternative for day laborers and domestic workers to soliciting employment in the streets or at employment agencies. In addition to organizing jobs with workers, NICE provides workforce development trainings, health and safety certification, assistance to recover unpaid wages, and other critical services in the community.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct student intake and assessments
  • Teach ESOL classes based on NICE curriculum
  • Maintain ESL class records and reports on program activities

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • TESOL certificate or other ESOL teacher training equivalent
  • Experience working with multi-level ESOL classes, a plus
  • Flexibility in schedule; classes may take place in the early morning, evenings and/or weekends
  • Ability to develop appropriate, trusting relationships with a predominantly Spanish-speaking community of immigrant workers
  • Strong social justice analysis, particularly around immigration, class/labor, gender, and race
  • Experience working with immigrant communities or other vulnerable individuals
  • Experience managing cases with vulnerable individuals, a plus
  • Knowledge of computer operations (including but not limited to, Google Apps, Microsoft Office, etc.), as well as copiers, fax machines, and phones
  • Administrative and organizational skills necessary to carry out job description responsibilities

POSITION DETAILS

JOB TYPE:

Part-time, hourly  employment. 10-20 hours per week, not to exceed 25 hours per week.

LOCATION: 

Based in our offices in Jackson Heights, with opportunities for remote work and off-site work.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent organizational skills, particularly with attention to data entry and tracking
  • Willingness to do outreach in Queens and other boroughs, in a variety of contexts: street, business, direct service, government, etc.
  • Strong written and oral skills in Spanish and English
  • Ability to develop appropriate, trusting relationships with a predominantly Spanish-speaking community of immigrant workers
  • Superb time management skills to ensure project tracking each week
  • Strong social justice analysis, particularly around immigration, class/labor, gender, and race

SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Worker Center Associate will provide support and leadership in NICE’s Worker Center, assisting in three main areas: 1. job dispatch; 2. reception of new members; 3. data processing.

JOB TYPE: Full-time

HOURS: 7am-3pm, Monday thru Friday

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Greet individuals arriving the Center from 7am-12pm
    • Orient individuals to NICE, the Worker Center, the job dispatch process
    • Register them for trainings, as needed
    • Refer individuals internally and externally
  • Assist in the job dispatch process:
    • Receive calls from employers
    • Produce job orders when jobs and members are matched
    • Fill in for Job Dispatch Coordinator as needed
  • Manage the data for the Worker Center morning activities:
    • Coordinate the data entry for new members, jobs dispatched, job requests, skills trainings
    • Take photos of trainings, meetings
  • Manage physical space:
    • Ensure appropriate supplies on hand
    • Encourage member support in cleaning

SUMMARY OF POSITION

New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) is seeking a Worker Rights Manager who will be responsible for NICE’s program to empower immigrant workers who have been exploited by their employers.

JOB TYPE: Full-time

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage caseload of immigrant workers, including group cases, for labor violations (wage theft, discrimination, etc.)
  • Conduct screening for worker’s rights violations
  • Execute Worker Rights workshops and trainings, at NICE and partner organizations
  • Conduct city-wide outreach in-person and through social media
  • Register intakes and orient members who have worker’s rights needs
  • Plan and lead appropriate events for immigrant worker needs
  • Manage Wage Theft Associate, ensuring that the program overall meets quantitative and qualitative deliverables

NICE seeks Fall 2017 interns to play an integral part of our membership development and grassroots organizing campaigns. The interns will work alongside staff and a dedicated group of members.
