NICE is seeking 4 new interns to work with the organization beginning in February/ March of 2008. We are seeking:
1) Immigrant Family Services Case Manager Intern
2) Case Management/ Social Work Intern
3) Administrative/ Communications Intern
4) Organizing Intern


Immigrant Family Services Case Manager Intern

  • Case Manager Intern will be working directly with NICE's Social Worker, M.S.W.
  • The case manager intern will be responsible for organizing monthly educational workshops. This includes making contacts with presenters, doing outreach for the workshop, contacting media, and helping to facilitate the event. They will also be responsible for any follow-up and evaluation of the event itself.
  • An important task of the intern will be developing case management resources. The Case Management department of NICE is in need of developing more relationships with service providers in queens and throughout New York City, specifically agencies who work with immigrant populations. The intern will be expected to make site visits, present the NICE community to other agencies, and also start to develop inter-agency relationships.
  • The intern will be helping the social worker develop certain cases when appropriate. They might make referrals, contact the clients for meetings, and do investigation into different issues or matters for the client.
  • If the intern is interested, there are time and resources available at NICE for doing Fundraising. The intern will be trained on how to search for grants, develop a grant proposal, as well as pursue other types of financial support for the agency.


The Immigrant Family Services Program is dedicated to a Group Work and Community Organizing model of service provision. The purpose of the social work done here at NICE is to empower individuals and families to unite with others like themselves in order to find solutions to their problems. We strive to highlight the strengths of these individuals and families and give them a reason to continue to fight for what they want in their lives.

Immigrant Youth Initiative Education Intern
Description: New Immigrant Community Empowerment (N.IC.E.) is seeking an intern to work alongside the Education Coordinator in the development and implementation of an after school program in co-operation with I.S. 235 the Academy for New Americans based in Astoria, Queens. N.I.C.E.'s after school program aims to give immigrant youth a voice in their new community by helping to familiarize them with their new surroundings and environment, not as observers of this environment, but as active participants in their new communities. Immigrant youth are encouraged to identify problems in their community that they are personally affected by and then taught to conceptualize, design and organize a community service project which address these problems.

This is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in education and work within the New York City School System. Students interested in exploring a career in education, specifically working with ESOL students are strongly encouraged to apply.

Tasks for IYI Education Intern
- Assist Youth Initiative Program Coordinator in developing curriculum and teach after-school program at I.S. 235
- Brainstorm and create new units or sub-units for Curriculum, as needed
- Aid in administrative tasks such as attendance input
- Coordinate and attend field trips to local arts organizations
- Assist in end of school year activities: Student exhibit of work/community service project, party, T-shirts

Schedule: After-school club meets Fridays 2:30-4:30pm at I.S. 235
We ask for interns to commit to the duration of the spring semester (January to end of June except spring break). Internship is unpaid.

Administrative/ Communications Intern
Working directly with the Executive Director, the intern will:
- Provide administrative support by helping to organize files, answer telephones, sort through and reply to correspondence, ordering supplies, assisting in scheduling appointments.
- Provide financial management support by: entering data into Quickbooks (no experience necessary!), paying bills and maintaining vendor records, maintaining financial files
- Provide Communications support by: helping to draft, send and follow up on press releases and press advisories, developing and maintaining media contacts.

This position is designed for an undergraduate college student or high school student interested in getting a feel for non-profit work and for immigrant rights work. The student will be have the opportunity to learn about the broad range of activities taking place in the organization and play a key role in supporting these activies.

Organizing Intern
NICE is looking for an organizing intern to reach out to our non-Latino constituency. Currently, NICE engages in grassroots organizing for immigrant and workers rights, running two organizing groups: the 'Comite de Derechos del Inmigrante' (Immigrant Rights Committee) and the 'Comite de Trabajadores' (Worker's Rights Committee). We would like to expand and reach new community members that would like to form similar organizing Committees at NICE. Working closely with Jared Salcedo our current Advocacy Intern, the organizing Intern would:

Outreach to the Community by

  • Strategizing with Advocacy Intern and Executive Director to determine communities to be targeted.
  • Engaging in conversations with leaders in targeted communities so as not to duplicate services but to build strength.
  • Talking with members of targeted communities, inviting them to NICE and creating needs assessments.


Aid Coalition Work by

  • Attend meetings with existing coalition partners.
  • Research, and outreach to other networks and coalitions as appropriate
  • Bring relevant information back to Committees


Prep for Meetings and Event by

  • Make and distribute announcement flyers, making reminder phone calls
  • Develop written agenda for meetings in collaboration with Advocacy Intern and Executive Director.
  • Facilitate meetings and develop leadership skills to encourage member facilitation.
  • Help Committee members prepare for events:
  • Coordinate poster-making, t-shirt making, etc.
  • Help members prepare written statements for public speaking opportunities.


Language: We encourage applicant to have strong communication skills in English, in addition to speaking a second language other than Spanish, preferably Bangla, Hindi or Urdu.
